Inspirational

Very heart warming and touching. I could not put this book down. If you plan on reading make sure you have a box of tissues near. This book gives life new perspective. The author conveys a very heartfelt account of his very personal life knowing that he has limited time on earth with his very young son. It will change your life as you will find new appreciation for the "little things" in life that really mean the most.

How sad for a Father to know how short his time on earth is but how wonderful for him to pour his heart and soul into letters that that will allow him (Bryce) to get to know him after his Father has passed.

What a great tribute to his son! I had a difference of opinion on several of Shaun's belief's but then again...who am I to judge? This is between him and his son Bryce and Shaun tried to be as honest and forthwright as he could with the time he had left.

I applaud Shaun.

one of the very best novels that I’ve had the pleasure to read

I’ll start by saying that Train is, quite simply, one of the very best novels that I’ve had the pleasure to read. In the realms of Holocaust fiction it is right up there alongside The Book Thief and far superior (both in terms of storytelling and authenticity) to The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. Train gripped me from start to finish. Told through the narrative of the book’s six main characters, Train takes place over ten days in 1943 Berlin and tells a story that allows the reader to hear from and think about not only Jewish victims of the Holocaust but Roma, homosexuals, political dissidents and the disabled. Cohen set himself a heck of an educative task, but has achieved it with great fluency and without his objective making the storytelling feel false at any point.

Authenticity is a key to Train. The plot has pace and tantalising twists and turns, but at no point does Cohen sacrifice the authentic voice for a pleasing bloody nose for the bad guys. At no point did the story feel contrived.

Train is written with such maturity, and is so tightly drawn together (absolutely no action throughout the whole book seems to be there by accident or is included simply to fill a space – everything, even the most insignificant-seeming element, has its purpose) that it is hard to believe that this is Cohen’s debut. The characters are so strong and Cohen is able so brilliantly to allow the reader to identify with each character’s every emotion.

I loved this book. It’s intended as a text to educate teenagers about the Holocaust and about the less spoken of victims, but its appeal goes way beyond the teenage reader. I look forward to the inevitable movie in a couple of years time!

A gripping read

I unreservedly recommend this book. I found myself totally caught up in the drama and suspense of the tale. The author has created very believable and compelling characters who are easy to relate to.

The book is meticulously researched. Every detail, even the unlikely ones, are fact checked against the historical events. This is an amazing feat and really elevates this work in the field of youth holocaust education. As does the focus on the lesser-told narratives of the Holocaust. All of this only serves to enhance the gripping adventure in Train. Danny Cohen is a born story-teller.
At the end of the book I found myself desperate to know what happens to all of the characters in the future, and constructing sequels in my head. I hope there will be a sequel.

A Shocker

This is the most surprising young adult novel about the Holocaust that I have ever encountered. The author takes a well-trodden topic in literature - the Holocaust -, mixes it up, turns it around and out comes a surprising, suspense-filled novel that portrays a week in the lives of a group of young people from very different backgrounds (I don't want to spoil the story, but I can say that this cast of people was a first for me in any kind of Holocaust-related literature) as they struggle to survive the genocidal cleansing of Berlin in 1945. To top it off, the author, who is a Holocaust scholar, has invented his story around real historical events. So the book is also highly educational. I read 200 pages of the book in one sitting, and the rest the next day. To conclude: this is a wonderful novel - for youths and adults alike.

A Tasteful Serving Of Excellent Advice

Color me impressed! Curroca has taken a "job" and turned it into an art form. He's demonstrated how one can bring excellence to any endeavor, while making it clear that style, panache, charm, and an overall commitment to quality can translate into both dollars , and greater success in life.

Let's admit it: while we care about financial success, need financial success, we also appreciate talent and style. His tips here have all of that and more. Plus they serve up a certain dose of cleverness guaranteed to carry someone far.

I'll admit, I don't think this book is only for those looking to serve (in this field or any other; the integrity that underlies the advice can translate to nearly any field), it is also for those looking to create success for themselves, those committed to seeking and creating a certain standard, a particular way of being. Nearly anyone can take something away from this.

In addition to this, I was particularly fascinated by the wealth of information on food pairings, beverage selection, and a fascinating journey into the nuances of Sake, something I clearly knew far too little about!

Before I end this review, I want to make sure I let others know that this book would also be of particular interest to those running - or looking to open - a dining establishment. It could help set a certain tone for one's staff, I think, and could be very useful. In fact, one may want to even distribute copies to their staff, as I think they would find their business would benefit, and their staff would be happier, and of course, happier staff can translate to happier customers.

Highly recommended for aspiring servers

I felt a little silly when I realized the book I downloaded was a guidebook for servers - I was looking for a book on hosting dinner parties. I kept reading and I was pleasantly surprised. I have always been intrigued with servers who can get every drink and meal order right even for very large parties and this gave me some insight into that. Many of the tips that the writer gives is good, solid advice for anybody who comes into face to face contact with customers. He emphasized the importance of direct eye contact and smiling among others as part of the service. So for me this was actually a great mistake to make. I am happy I had a chance to read it and recommend it for anyone who aspires to be a great server.

Break on through to the other side of eating out!

I see this book being about the psychology first, all the rest second. You want find any academic theory there however. It’s all about what in the title, yet it feels like the right attitude is what makes the outcome the best possible. Social (emotional) intelligence is on the spot here. You may thoughtfully extrapolate author’s experience to other domains. Highly recommend this book also to those interested in psychology and human behaviors. I personally find reading this book very rewarding as it comes to getting into the skin of a server (as author calls him/her) and somehow into my own when I eat out. Thank you!

This book should be subtitled, "The Power of No More Bulls***"

This was a really amazing book. It literally changed my life. I have been reading a lot of self-development and psychology books and there are similar messages in all of them, including this one. This book just approaches it from a more simplistic "just do it" kind of perspective without all the scientific jargon of how you are rewiring your brain.

The end goal here is that amidst the spiritual undertones of the book, what Tolle is really educating people about is self-awareness, which is the cornerstone of growing emotional intelligence. I was reading Daniel Goleman's book, "Emotional Intelligence" at the same time and the parallels were quite obvious. The additional benefit that Tolle offers is walking through some meditations and affirmations and presenting the information in a way that is like an easy to digest conversation.

After I was about halfway through the book, I had a moment of sitting in my car by myself, and had the thought, "I don't have to take this bulls*** anymore, I am not a victim," and then I laughed for about five minutes and many months later, still feel great about all of the things I was able to let go of.

Life is in the NOW

Since a large percentage of our patient office visits are anxiety & stress based over past occurances or future worries, I think this book has the ability to wake people up to treating their medical issues in a different way. As physicians, I believe we must teach our patients skills instead of following Big Pharma & insurance companies demands to push 10 minute drug visits only. This book is a great help to bring people into present moment where we are not only okay but truly alive. I re listen to the audio version while doing my walks.

Eckhart Tolle's, The Power of Now, is a monumental achievement in spiritual literature.

The theme of the Power of Now is that you can find and maintain a deep sense of peace, joy and fulfillment, and in doing so, "return home to yourself." These concepts are very real and attainable. The goal is to break through the barrier of the noise of the mind. When you do this, it is like having total awareness of being alive. It is like being able to see the world with clarity and without the constant stream of mental judgments, mental noise and fear. Even the appearance of objects seems so different and vibrant. And even physical space takes on new meaning -- you sense that everything is connected. Knowledge takes on a deeper dimension that transcends language. Instead of having faith in God, you know and feel God. You go through life having a deep sense of peace and joy. You feel that peace and joy within yourself and external to yourself. It is a life with little mental fear. The peace you feel is not like coming home to yourself, it is coming home to yourself, meaning your natural state of being. When you realign with yourself, it becomes obvious that this state is the way you were meant to be.

A main theme to Eckhart Tolle's book, The Power of Now, is that humanity can change, but it will start with individuals returning to their spiritual center. Just as humanity can learn from the past of what it doesn't want to be; humanity can learn from the past what it wants to be. His message is that we need to look to the past and see the common thread of messages of hope given to us. These messages of hope are: (1) that we are spiritual beings; (2) that we do have an innate joy and peace within; (3) that we essentially have God within us; and (4) that we can experience a new reality that is radically different, but radically true to whom we are.

The Power of Now's message is that many people of he past and present have broken the barrier of fear and discontentment; they have rediscovered or reconnected with their deep sense of peace and joy. In our lack of understanding, we often refer to these people with terminology that may not really be accurate: "enlightened," "awakened," "mystics," "gurus," "holy," etc. These terms are too loaded and create an impression that such a state is unlikely to occur to the average person. We can find our peace and joy and find it now. We are not discriminated against when it comes to God's Grace.

Tolle aids the process of coming home to ourselves. He provides us with an age-old message and road map to achieve this. The road map is simple, yet so profound. The message is simply: we need to quiet our minds.

So, how do we quiet our minds according to Tolle? How do we realign with ourselves? How do we take off the onion layers to our minds and reconnect with that joyful and peaceful part of ourselves?

The term meditation is probably not what you think or have been taught. Meditation as it used here is more a way of life that can be used in any and every activity you do for the rest of your life. Eckhart Tolle talks about different ways to get reconnected with ourselves. What is interesting is that many of the methods are somewhat mechanical, and the process is less spiritual than one might think. The end result, however, is certainly deeply spiritual.

Some of these methods are:

1. Breathing and being aware of your breathing;
2. Being the witness of your thoughts without judgment -- allowing thoughts to flow without identifying with your thoughts -- deeply acknowledging that you are not our thoughts;
3. Feeling your physical body and allowing it be without judgment;
4. Feeling your emotional body (including the emotional pain) and allowing it be without going on thinking tangents about the pain -- just being there with the raw physical emotional pain.
5. Getting in touch with the silence and stillness that is ever present; (so as you listening intently to the world around, you pay attention also to the silence that is behind all sounds);
6. Being totally present where you are and allowing that which happens to be;
7. Acknowledge and avoid the traps of time -- with a deep understanding that in reality what happened in the past is no longer; and what happens in the future is not now (basically time really does not, from a physics perspective, exist);
8. Accepting what you are at any given moment;
9. The simple act of asking God to allow you to feel His presence/His Grace, and then, the act of you feeling God's presence;
10. To go deep inside yourself and realize that innate joy that is ever present -- God.
11. Feeling the stillness within yourself.

One myth is that to obtain peace, joy and God, you need to takes years of monk-like seclusion. In fact, finding what was traditionally known as "enlightenment" could take a few minutes. The quicker you break down the noise of the mind and become present with the world without judgment, the quicker you can come home to yourself.

what a wonderful collegiate wrestling love story

Wow, what a wonderful collegiate wrestling love story. Seriously this is one of the best jock gay fiction / male/male romance tales I’ve read in a while. Right up there with J.H. Kiley’s ‘Out’ and Mickie B. Ashling’s ‘Horizons’.

Free of a meth-head mother, an abusive father, and a backwoods trailer park that he called home, poor boy Jeremy Miller has high hopes as he sets off for college. He is looking to gain some friends, win a spot on the wrestling team, and do well in the major he selected. But most of all he’s hoping to find a real boyfriend. Someone with whom he can be openly affectionate and who will be open with him in return. On the very first day, Jeremy meets Beck, the gorgeous and talented captain of the wrestling team, and sparks fly. But Jeremy isn’t sure if Beck is straight or gay and he can’t just ask a guy that, right? Is Beck flirting with him or is Jeremy just imagining something he desperately wants?

Captain of the college wrestling team, Beck, has a strict regime and a serious strategy for college. Outing himself is not in the plan. It could screw up his wrestling scholarship and that, hard work, and keeping his head down will guarantee he’ll earn the Sports Medicine degree he’s after in record time. He’s managed to control his sexual appetite through his dedication to his sport and by the occasional visit to an off-campus gay bar where mum is the word should you meet your hookup on campus. But everything changes on the first day of his junior year, when he sees a freshman butting heads with one of his wrestling teammates. Startled by the instant attraction he feels for the freshman, suddenly he’s making moves of a type he’s forbidden himself, and endangering his well-laid plans. He tries to put on the brakes, but despite his best efforts Beck can’t stop thinking about the hotheaded, hot-bodied freshman, Jeremy Miller.

This is one snappy and romantic story. Skillfully written in a mixed point of view, bi-chapter style, the story is put together like a sleek racing machine. I couldn’t stop reading it and even now, have difficulty believing it’s 336 pages long—the story simply flies. Hot boys, lots of tension, and tons of fulfilling, meaningful smex-isodes make for a helluva romantic story. The mixed POV style let me get to know the two leads intimately and I’d be hardpressed to pick which one I loved more.

Jeremy is adorable as the plucky, talented boy from the wrong side of the tracks, who’s been running off his grit all his life. Jeremy has never backed down from a fight and he’s not going to start just because college life is new to him. He’s not out looking for trouble, but if it finds him, well, I feel sorry for the other guy. Wrap all that grit and confidence up in a hot, tight, compact-bodied, sweet-faced boy wrestler, and you have the best of both worlds. Yeah, Jeremy is smoking hot for all the right reasons.

I found Beck to be the ultimate all-American golden boy. And there is nothing quite as agreeable as reading about a hot, straight-laced, talented, mature Boy Scout with a plan—getting put through his paces when love comes a calling. Beck was perfect in this role and really believable. I applaud the author for showing restraint at the appropriate moments with Beck, it really highlighted his shock and scramble attitude and gave a genuine realism to his character.

When I try to pinpoint what made this story so good, I have to start with the pacing. It was phenomenal. There was an almost perfect balance between the tender, tense, hot and apprehensive moments in the story. And finally, and this is hard for me to put into words, but I’ll give it a go. The author has a good grip on what makes a male—a male. Both characters had a solid goal-orientated mindset that is true to men. Before they were gay, before they were wrestlers, what I got first, is that Jeremy and Beck were men, and that is no easy accomplishment when writing romance.

And yes I did tap my Kindle and order all the other books Amazon carries for this author, immediately. Love this story, L.O.V.E!!! Thank you Maris Black, I’m having a really good time with your boys.

I am an instant fan of Maris' writing. 3D characters, good balance of descriptive scenes and perfect dialogue. I love the crossover with characters from Owning Corey (which you should read before Pinned; even though they stand alone, the character crossover is a spoiler alert).

I'm not usually a fan of stories of college guys built like Greek gods but I enjoy the way Maris weaved this story. It was enjoyable and all of the characters are likable in their own way. I think a little less focus on "perfect bodies" and some books featuring some older characters would be a welcome development. I'm happy to read about young characters, but something like 2% of the world's population have model bodies/looks so I do like books about real people, too :)

"Pinned" to my seat

Seldom do I find a book that captivates from the get go. As soon as I started reading, I became enthralled with the story. I loved the interaction between Beck and Jeremy. Beck has everything to loose yet he is the one to pursue Jeremy. This is a story of not only love but fighting for what you want at the cost of coming out and it's potential pitfalls. Behind the bravado of Jeremy stands an emotionally damaged kid. Thank God that Beck sees through this. The secondary characters are well developed, especially Gretchen. The blackmail by coach Bradley inserts an interesting twist to the story. If you love campus coming out stories with well written sex scenes, you will not be disappointed.

One of the best commentaries on Hebrews

One of the great New Testament scholars of the twentieth century was F.F. Bruce, whose commentary on Hebrews is part of the New International Commentary on the New Testament series. As is the case with his other works, Bruce's writing is clear and accessible to the layperson looking for an overview of Hebrews. As with the other commentaries in the NICNT, this commentary places the more technical matters, including those involving the Greek text, in footnotes.

The introductory material is quite useful as well. As is well known, the question of the authorship of "Hebrews" has engendered a lively and centuries-long discussion. Bruce does a great job of discussing the various suggestions regarding authorship and reaches the modest but reasonable conclusion that we cannot know for sure, except that it is almost certain that the Apostle Paul is not the author. Bruce's discussion of the canonicity of the book is also worth reading.

Our Future Awaits!!!

THE BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET KINK BOOK 4 started off where the previous installment ended with Mica and Knox getting the shock of their lives hearing Paul Banning's confession.

Despite the bombshell that Mica received she didn't let it ruined what she and Knox were trying to build. And even if she wanted to, Knox wouldn't leave her dwell in the past.

Speaking of Knox, he too received some life altering information from his mother who hadn't spoken a word in two decades. What Knox learned shattered him but Mica wouldn't let him crumbled no matter what she had to do.

Mica and Knox saw each other through their troubled times, they were each other's safe haven and strength. Loved how Knox's brothers and fur babies took an instant liking to Mica.

Knox and Mica finally got their HEA, they chose not to hold on to the past and moved on with their lives together, planning a future.

Lisa Ladew did great, I'm looking forward to the rest of the Rosesson brothers' stories....I recommend this book.

I am soooooooooo happy,. I read book 4 in record time, I could barely stand to put it down long enough to work, cook, drive.. ;) Book 4 is an awesome conclusion to a wonderfully romantic suspense novel. The stalker, Bailey is in hiding but life goes on for our 2 main characters. Knox and Mica are happy. The only cloud over their heads is waiting for him to turn up when least expected. Knox is on it and has his brothers backing them up. I loved the ending, happy couple with an unresolved issue. I look forward to reading more about them in future books about the brothers.. I see plenty of good reading on it's way. Lisa Ladew has a wonderful talent for spinning romantic suspense and as always, she delivers.

What a read!!!!

Words can't describe the thrill ride you will go in this book. I love this couple and the past and present about their story. Very suspenseful and engaging. You won't put it down once you start it. When you think you know one thing you find yourself wrong and your mouth dropped open. I find myself talking to the the book and saying NO NO NO !!!! Def some heart stopping moments. Read this and all her series. Well worth the read.

Exactly as Described

This is book is exactly what it says it is in the description. The book has guitar tabulature for every song on Creed's first album. Each song is scored with music, tab, lyrics, and chords. It is very simple to read and understand. The only problem a novice might have is understanding the alternate tunings that Mark Tremonti uses on different songs. This book does not do a very good job of explaining that. Otherwise this is a well put together book of note for note transcriptions of every song.
