Helpful - But Will Probably Raise More Questions Than Answers for the Novice...

Having participated as a team member, led (been a team leader), and hosted (run 3 at once) Shingijutsu-Kaizen, I can say this book is true to their method. After reading the book twice, and taking copious notes (the equivalent of 4 A4-sized pages using 10-point font), I below highlight some potential pro and con of this particular text as I see it today. For your consideration:

Pro:
+ Use of the "No Good" concept for stimulating creativity/breaking paradigms is a best practice you should consider adopting
+ Promotion of learn by doing also a personal favorite
+ Some clever definitions via quote/phrase/simple observation - which I think many with find thought provoking
+ Emphasis on respect for people (several places) are very helpful for quoting/reference and I will use often
+ Excellent summary for instructor-led kaizen process in Chapter 10. Short and to the point - enough to do it correctly
+ Contains a simple beauty and power I cannot seem to describe. Post a reply if you can... I would like to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Con:
- Majority of this book contains listings of lesson topics to try, discuss, or reflect upon during kaizen, hansei, or kata. In some ways this is a pro, in some ways a con. However, after much thought, I list this as a con because given the vehicle delivery (text) it is unlikely the wisdom herein will be squeezed out wiithout some additional force (a casual reader will not have an adequate vehicle). I think a chapter on establishing/promotion of a regimen to stimulate digestion of this large "meal" into small "bites" would be very helpful.
- There is a void on management engagement. I am unsure how to go about scolding my COO, VPs, or anyone else for that matter to create the dire circumstances that in turn force people to be more creative. I need help understanding how I can do this and remain employed, or at least not be hated and thus shunned.
- I'd prefer a hard cover. I get this is a raft of sorts - good to get me so far, then I will outgrow it and leave it behind - but still, hardcover is more enduring.

Back to the source of successful Lean transformations

Just finished reading (several times) the book and the first thing that stroke me is the incredible amount of wisdom concentrated in 98 pages…. The second thing was – although the subtitle is Kaizen for the next generation – even the older generations have a lot to learn from it. Just an example: when Nakao-san says “Master the basics” doesn't it trigger the automatic question: “What are the basics?” Now try to find that answer from the ocean of Lean literature out there. The pertinence of each of the phrases cited in this book is backed by the fact that it comes from the one that actively participated in one of the most successful Lean transformations to date.

A must read for Lean people and ones wanting to learn Lean

I have been trained by Chihiro Nakao for over 20 years and I have to say that Bob Emiliani has shown the true essences of Nakao San in this book, and why he is truly the best Kaizen sensei that I know.
This book is a must read for anybody starting there Lean Journey and will be on my must read list for all my Lean people.
Great Book Bob, Katsusaburo San and Rudy well done...

was an amazingly prolific writer. Murray began writing on the

pastoral work, but he became internationally known for his

deeper relationship with Christ. With intense purpose and zeal

Christ centered response to the missionary problem!

Andrew Murray's book is one of the best books I've read in my Doctor of Ministries program. The postmodern culture in which we live has made personal evangelism a subject of derision and scorn. Many churches have even relegated individual soul winning as an archaic practice. Murray repeatedly makes the case that the reason soul winning is no longer fashionable is due to the lack of love we have for Jesus Christ Himself. Murray's book is like a breath of fresh air in an age when we focus on 'political correctness' and 'pluralism' and 'tolerance' to the exclusion of upholding the Biblical standard and obedience to the directive to go and make disciples of all peoples. If we claim to be Christian we cannot ignore Jesus' command to be His witnesses in the world to bring people to faith in Him. The Key to the Missionary Problem is a powerful, inspirational, work that should be read by every person who claims the title 'Christian'. The key to the problem is definitely a personal one; the solution to which is renewed love for Jesus and renewed love for those without faith in Jesus; enough love to share the message of salvation in Jesus Christ with them.

Christian Missions The Way It Ought To Be & How it can be.

In 1901, New York City was the site of a large and important Christain Missions Conference. No less than revivalists and missionary luminaries, Dwight Moody, Smith Wigglesworth and Hudson Taylor tried to persuade Andrew Murray of South Africa to minister wtih them. Andrew Murray declined - twice. The Missions Conference sessions were transcribed in their entirity and the manuscript sent to Murray. The Key to the Missionary Problem is his discerning and insightful response. He outlines in brief what he understood the other participants to say before launching an answer that hits a bullseye not even targeted by the others. A highligt from Chapter three gives a brilliant history of the Moravians (the present-day Brethren Congregationalists), the most successful missionary sending church since the days of Pentecost. Chapter six sets out a description of the evidence of the Holy Spirit in a Christian's life that should delight and challenge even todays believers. The Key to the Missionary Problem is a "must read" for all of us who hold dear the ideal of a personal walk with Jesus Christ.

Changed my life!

To start I would like to note that I love Andrew Murray's books. They are always so Christ focused, accept the Scripture as the final authority and promote genuine holiness.

Key to the Missionary Problem is no different. As a missionary, I concur with Andrew Murray that the vast majority of problems in promoting and carrying out missions is a lack of zeal and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. As I have travelled to many missions conferences, pastors conventions and churches in preparing to enter full time missionary service, I noticed that much of the emphasis in such conferences is on side issues rather than obeying the Great Commission out of pure love for Christ. We must love GOD above all else and MEN secondly. Any theology that promotes loving men over that of loving God is idolatrous.

Andrew Murray does not only present the problem but offers the solution. He gives pastors, missionaries and other Christian leaders the key to understanding the failure of the Church to complete the Great Commission after 2,000 years as well as the key to solving it.

This book also contains excellent information about great missions movements in the past, particularly the Moravians.

This book placed me under such conviction that it put me to the carpet in seeking God for personal revival. I shed tears, shouted, jumped with joy and couldn't wait to tell my wife and friends what great things I was reading.

The careful documentation of the discoveries and history of mathematics is of overwhelming importance, especially in modern times where the advances are taking place so rapidly that the historical roots of some branches of mathematics seem to be getting lost. It would be a tragedy if the history of these important developments were not put into print so that later generations of mathematicians and students could have an understanding of how these came about. Thanks to the information age, the accessibility of mathematical documents has dramatically increased, but these documents usually do not include overviews of how the ideas took root and then flourished as independent research disciplines.
This book gives a general overview of mathematical developments up until the middle of the twentieth century. It is a fascinating story, and readers will realize to what extent mathematical ideas deemed complex by even modern standards were known by the ancients. Indeed, it is very surprising to learn that in 2000 BC the Babylonians were solving quadratic equations and even some cubic and quartic equations. The Babylonians did not produce an Evariste Galois, that took centuries more time, but they were dealing with mathematical constructions that were interesting to compare with modern methods.
One very interesting feature of this book is that it is meant to be used as a textbook, and not just in a course in the history of mathematics. The author has included "problem studies" and "essay topics" at the end of each chapter that challenge the reader to solve problems pertinent to the historical topics of each chapter. The inclusion of these problems will allow the student to gain insight on the difficulty in solving problems with the constraint of using concepts that were unique to a definite period in mathematical history.
The book also includes discussions of the history of non-Western contributions to mathematics. The work of the Hindus, the Chinese, and Arabs is included. The contributions of the Arabs are particularly important for later developments in the West, as it was they who revived Greek philosophy and mathematics and consequently changed dramatically the role of mathematics in Europe.
The reading of this book will give a greater appreciation of the developments in mathematics as they are done today. Mathematical research now is done by both human and machine, and no doubt this century, and others beyond it, will result in brilliant developments. Mathematics pervades every human activity in the modern world and every piece of technology. When books like this one are written in the future, readers who peruse them and take note of the incredible advancements made in mathematics in the centuries that preceed them, no doubt their predominant emotion will be astonishment.

Very interesting read - Very hard problems

This was the textbook for a History of Math class I took at U of Iowa. The readings in each chapter are very interesting. As the other reviewers said, if you are interested in math, you will enjoy reading the text.

The problem is that the attached essays and problems for each chapter are not possible to be solved/completed just given the information in the chapter. The readings are generally qualitative descriptions of the historical development and then the problems ask you to (for example) find the tangent to the curve the way it would have been done by this ancient mathematician and then by this other ancient mathematician, etc. I spent hours every week searching online for enough information to complete the homework.

Great!

I agree with the person who said this book is very informative & it is also easy to read. I learned lots from doing the problems too, like for example, a simple algorithm on how to construct magic squares of odd size. This book was good for the course I did because there's only so much you can do in a course; Morris Kline's "Mathematical Thought From Ancient to Modern Times" is twice as long as this one so it goes into much more detail, but too much for a 1-term course. This book by Eves is a good INTRO to the history of math, I liked it.

A great book!

Amazing book!!!! I think every woman should read this book because it shows how important when we say no to abortion. Today, the number of abortion is really high, and we can change this situation when we educate ourselves and our family about this matter.

I have read all of John's books. I am sorry I wasted my time on this one. If he doesn't want to entertain us anymore with his great writing abilities he should quit while he is ahead.

Should of stopped at 11.

I can't believe how bad this book was compared to other 11. It was never Shakespeare, but this reads like a 9th grade book report.
