This book makes some good points about how to teach speaking of the English ...

This book makes some good points about how to teach speaking of the English Language when it compares how natives English Speakers learn language from birth. It opened up my mind to some different ways of approaching my students which will be helpful. We will be going on field trips to different places and stores in the local area for vocabulary lessons. I will include pictures with all new vocabulary plus we will learn vocabulary in the form of phrases and whole sentences to get a notion of grammar without studying it specifically, so they will not be trying to conjugate verbs mentally. I will recommend that they watch TV shows in English with English subtitles to help them with their listening skills. We will start with children's shows and work our way up as their vocabulary and confidence grows. I will get them involved with other students to start a conversation group where they feel comfortable speaking and will not be worried about making mistakes. I have learned that the local two year colleges in the area have them and I will ask if my students may join in. If not, we will start one of our own.

If you are trained as a teacher, beware, this author really dislikes the educational system of any school anywhere in the world. I suspect he really hated schooling, particularly grammar, and he likes to make a point of saying so. However, It does make sense that when teaching English conversation, which children learn first, not to hamper the student's mind with grammatical rules and verb conjugation. These things should be taught later after speaking in English is deeply rooted in the student and they are ready to write.

He repeatedly mentions a CD (or DVD) that has lessons on it that a student should use with his book. This is NOT included with his $11 book. I am glad I purchased the book but I felt the author has a touch of charlatanism. I believe he wants the book purchaser to find his website on the internet and purchase a full course of video sessions which supplement his book for the mere sum of $29 for 6 months (a little less than $180) By reading more of this book, I have also discovered that iTunes has a list of dated podcasts that are supposed to relate to the book. They were free and a subscription was offered at $5.00 per lesson for newer versions. I listened in on about three of the free lessons and thought them to be boring. I also discovered about 20 to 30 video podcasts which spent a lot of time going over the author's new VIP program for learners. They talked about money and the need for getting better equipment for his computer. I will not be using any of these media links for my lessons.

Not a worth for your money. He just listed too much redundant information to fill pages to sell the book. I do not understand why this book is rated so high. Overrated and do not waste your money.

The fundamental of this book is from the Effortless English system. As a person who used the system for many long times, the whole ideas are not new to me, but still worth it for people recently learn or decide to buy some of those courses.

Anyway, I decide joining VIP member after reading this book. I want to be me, like this time when I was learning the Power English Lesson.

Don't be fooled by the title of this book. It is not an architectural treatise, it's a children's book with cutouts that let you make a paper model. If you want a good book on the architecture of Geodesic Domes, buy a biography of Buckminster Fuller.

The geometry of geodesic domes using cut-out models

This is classified as a children's book, but it isn't so simple. It would be suitable for teenagers but the mathematics is relevant whatever your age and it is described clearly and concisely. However, if you're looking for a book on dome architecture this is not for you. There are two models that demonstrate the ideas about the subdivision of triangles to approximate the sphere based on the octahedron and the icosahedron. Then there are three 'architectural' dome models and lastly a model of the carbon molecule bukminsterfullerene. Each model is included for a reason and there's an explanatory text to accompany each one. The book does not cover real examples of domes much (only a sketch of the Expo 67 pavilion), although the introduction briefly explains the history and reason for them. It is important to understand that this is not a book about dome architecture: it covers the math behind the concept and explains it using cut-out models.

The 20th c. classic in Protestant liberal theology

Paul Tillich's ~Systematic Theology~ is one of the most important theological works of the 20th century, and the theological system par excellence of liberal Protestant Christianity. In his day, Tillich was held in high esteem not only among theologians, but by experts in many different fields for his incredible breadth of knowledge, his insight into culture, and his humanity.
'Liberal Protestantism' sought to reconcile the gospel and the Christian faith with contemporary cultural ideas, rather then set the two up against each other. Religion is, for Tillich, the best of culture. (An alternative view, for example, is that of Karl Barth, who saw the gospel as fundamentally a critique of culture - as the Word speaking from outside ~to~ the world, not within the world). So, for Tillich, there should be signs of God everywhere, not just in Christianity, and religion and culture and closely connected.
God, for Tillich, is not therefore the anthropomorphized God of the Old Testament, who has a personality and creates and destroys and judges in an almost arbitrary fashion. Instead, Tillich sees God as 'the ground of being'. God is the very fundament on which rests everything that is. God is the Abyss.
The problem with man, for Tillich, is his 'finitude'. Man's life is finite, his body makes him finite, his capacities are finite, yet he craves to transcend these, to be unlimited, to be God. This is impossible; rather one should accept one's finitude courageously. This is what Jesus did singularly and perfectly - he never sinned, because he always accepted the finite nature of his being; he faced death courageously. Tillich's christology is therefore a 'spirit christology' (Jesus was led by the spirit) rather than a 'logos christology' (Jesus was God incarnate, the Word made flesh).
The last important thing is that Tillich makes use of his famous 'theory of correlation'. This is how the 3 volumes of his ~Systematic Theology~ are set up. According to this theory, things in culture are correlated with the theology; theology provides the 'answers' to the 'questions' posed by culture. So his five sections (divided among the 3 volumes) are called: 'Reason and Revelation', 'Being and God', 'Existence and the Christ', 'Life and the Spirit', 'History and the Kingdom of God'.
Tillich's writing is for the most part easy enough to read for the layperson - just don't get bothered by particular tricky bits. I would recommend it to anyone interested in theology; it has influenced a generation of theologians.

Review of Volume II

There isn't much more that I can say besides WOW! Paul Tillich uses a modern existential analysis of the human condition, and then a radical reinterpretation of the Christian tradition to understand and conquer the bleak condition of existential estrangement.
In this volume, Tillich examines the conditions of existence and the feature of Christianity which makes it distinctive among religions: the Christ. Explaining that all religions are meant to diagnose the human condition and to provide ways to reunite man with his essential being. He shows how sin, guilt, and pride are marks of the estrangement of man from his essential self and how religion has consistently and traditionally explained this facet of his existence.
However, he then begins his reinterpretation of the Christ event as the "bearer of New Being," where Christ is the model for all to reunite themselves with their essence - to exist without being overcome by estrangement.
In the book, Tillich uses an easy-to-read and uncomplicated prose to explain his ideas. No where near as complex as other thinkers, but easily as intelligent and dense, Tillich's Systematic Theology is the best attempt at a systematic reinterpretation of the Christian message I've ever read, and is a must-read for anyone interested in a discernible and acceptable rendtion of the Christian story in the world today.

Tillichian Christology

In Tillich's first volume of this series, he discusses the sources of theology as he sees them - scripture (both text and the events behind the text), the overall church history and tradition, and the wider traditions and history of religion in the world. Tillich has a problem with seeing experience as a source, but rather prefers this to be seen more appropriately as the medium through which the sources are understood and analysed. Tillich introduces norms and the rational character of systematic theology - Tillich is in many ways writing for philosophers who have discounted the validity of theology in the modern world; by emphasising the aspects of reason and logic in his system, he carries more weight in that community. Tillich also develops his famous Method of Correlation, a dialectical system of engagement between the temporal situation and the eternal in an ongoing process.

Tillich explores the various aspects and relationship of reason and revelation, including ways of trying to make sense in a rational manner of revelations, including what constitutes final revelation. From here, Tillich proceeds with his ontological constructions - one of the keys to Tillich's overall theology is contained here, in which God is the `ground of being'. Some have accused Tillich of being an existential atheist, because they have heard that Tillich claims that God does not exist - while it is true that, for Tillich, God does not exist, it is not true that there is no God; Tillich defines the term `existence' as being `that which is created', and as God is not a created being, God cannot exist. Rather, God is something greater, something deeper - the ground of being. God also becomes the only appropriate `ultimate concern' (another key element in Tillich's theology) - that concept is developed in that volume as well.

While one could read the second volume without benefit of the first volume, it could be tricky. Volume two is primarily Tillich's Christology. Tillich has a small section that relates the second volume to the first, and restatements some major points from the first volume, but very quickly jumps into the concepts of existence/existentialism and Christian theology, developing from there concepts of sin and human estrangement (setting the stage for Christ and salvation/redemption in the new being of Christ). For Tillich, the central question of the age is one of meaning, and Christ is meaningful, as a New Being, who has a uniqueness and a universality, but not in typical Christian theological ways.

Tillich, in his three-volume series on Systematic Theology, addresses the overall problem of meaning and meaninglessness in modern times. Written in the middle of the twentieth century, Tillich's theology is greatly influenced by the intellectual developments of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century philosophies, including such schools of thought as phenomenology (Husserl, Heidegger, etc.) as well as existentialism, and in particular issues such as `the death of God' philosophical/theological speculations. Tillich's theology is also significantly influenced by (as are the intellectual developments of which he was part) larger historical events such as the first and second world wars. Tillich, a native of Germany, saw meaninglessness first-hand in the trench warfare of the first world war, in which he served as a chaplain. He also saw problems in the rise of the Nazi party, not just for political and cultural issues, but also theological issues (such as the idolatry of the state over God).

Tillich, spirited out of Germany during the rise of the Nazi power, spent the remainder of his career teaching in universities and seminaries in the United States. This second volume of his major work in Systematic Theology was produced in 1957, while he was teaching in the United States - it is dedicated to his friends at Union Theological Seminary, where he first taught after leaving Germany.

Tillich's theology is continued in two other volumes, the first volume produced in 1950, and the third volume in 1963, a few years before Tillich's death in 1965. Taken together, the three volumes represent a major theological force in the twentieth century, and one that is bound to continue to have impact for generations to come.

Apt for beginners

This book is well written and well organized. Kudos to the author and all the other members who had involved in designing,publishing this book.

If one would see from a senior Automation tester or Automation test lead point of view, they would say explanation of advanced concepts of qtp, frameworks could have been a bit more better.

For the beginner, intermediate level QTP guys this book would be very useful to initiate,fine-tune their Automation testing skills.
Once again I really appreciate the whole team in publishing this book :-)

Most appropriate book for beginners and for advance learner. Author does not jump on complex concepts at first go rather build the knowledge piece by piece and giving screen shots for better understandings.
Concepts on Automation architecture, frameworks are properly written.

The second in Sharon Lathan's Darcy Saga (Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy) fails on two levels. Readers new to Darcy and Elizabeth will be bored reading page after page about two paragons—he is a gracious and expert billiards player, she is an excellent manager of the household—while they go about their life, with the occasional dustup with Lady Catherine, all while awaiting the birth of their first child. Meanwhile, Austen lovers may well be insulted to read un-Austenesque conversations, scenes and goings-on. Either way, the brilliance of Austen is notably absent. Too often the day-in-the-life focus seems small, as do the couple's PG-13–level lusty thoughts and behaviors. Yes, it's romantic that in a break of Regency tradition they sleep in the same bed and make love often, but it's a lot of nothing after their 15th bout, as is suffering through Darcy hiding his erections from a jovial, knowing father-in-law-to-be. Austen's characters deserve far better than this. (Sept.)

Loving Mr. Darcy... over... and over... and over... again.

I bought three of the books in this series, starting with this one, eager to read them as I'd enjoyed some of the other P&P sequels out there. I was looking for escape, some transport to a time of grace and manners. I read 1/3 of this book and promptly returned all three for a full refund. They are a chore to read. They have none of the charm, intelligence, and chaste, yet terribly sweet and romantic feel of the real Jane Austen. The back flap has the audacity to say that Jane would probably have approved of this. Oh my, I beg to differ.

The genius of Jane Austen was her ability to make character, scenes, and plots come to life in a way that timelessly transcends the era of the reader. P&P is the single best romance novel ever written (just my opinion)and she did it at a time when women weren't encouraged in such pursuits and she did it without one sex scene or deep, hungering kiss. I didn't have to read the passion and love. I felt it. It made me want to keep reading and that kept me dreaming and imagining.

Ms. Lathan's series, however, has no plot. No scene set that we couldn't just picture from one of the movies. The only characters that mildly develop are Georgianna, Mary, and Miss Bingley. And Elizabeth and Darcy? They are the dullest, most self-absorbed sex addicts ever to grace a Regency novel from any time. They fawn and coo over each other all day and not 3 pages passes without them getting naked and going at it, almost perturbed that the others in their lives prevent them from non-stop bedsport. It's impossible to read if you have any respect at all for the original. I don't mind a little added "heat" but this drivel is just painful and ridiculous.

Boom boom. Oh my beloved lover, I love you and want to show you with a new position I've dreamed of. Oh, William, the pleasure you give me, I can't wait to devise more ways to show you the ardent depth of my deep love. Boom boom. 3 pages. A dance. A meal. Boom boom. A mention of family or friends. Boom. Shopping. Repeat.

So close, yet...

I was given this silly but readable P & P sequel by a friend who knows I'm an Austen addict. It's enjoyable, but... a bit insipid. I haven't read the book that precedes this, but Ms Lathan appears to have paid attention to her critics. There is more of Darcy and Elizabeth's families, more connection to the wider world, of Elizabeth's experience at becoming Mrs. Darcy among the Ton. However, too often the dialog seems straight out of a bad bodice ripper novel. There's incessant lovemaking, coupled (pun intended) with drippy dialog that is simultaneously coy and explicit. IE: "She looked into his shining eyes, hers misty...(Darcy)'Save the words my lover. Rather, free your mind and devise stimulating bedroom actions that will convey the depth of your gratitude.'(p.109)
Ugh! It actually takes away from the story, which I found enjoyable - Caroline Bingley is believably developed, as are Mary and Kitty. However, Lydia and Wickham are noticeably absent, as are Charlotte or Mr Collins.

I'm indeed an Austen fan, but not a purist where language and setting are concerned. Really getting Austen right is beyond many modern authors, especially romantic authors. Austen wasn't about romance, after all, but about romance as a vehicle for examining character, society and even religion. Some authors are better at using 19th c Regency language and imagery; others do not even try. Ms Lathan is is somewhere between. However, like too many Austen sequels, this one seems to embrace explicit sexual as a substitute for strong dialog, an intriguing story, and fully engaging characters. This isn't a bad sequel - It is just that Ms Lathan is capable of more than just another Harlequin romance masquerading as an Austen sequel.

Enough already!

I read the first book in this series a long while ago and found it to be a sweet book. I re-read the book at the time that I purchased this one, and I wondered what I ever saw in the book in the first place. This book was even worse than the first.

There is simply no plot... at all! In the first book or the second book. I adore the relationship of Elizabeth and Darcy, but when the book is full of nothing but the two of them quoting of their love over and over to the point where I roll my eyes every time I see one of those passages coming (which is practically every page), it's time to say... enough is enough! It's ridiculous, really, and I have a feeling Austen herself would have gagged after a while of reading this rubbish. Her beautiful characters are gone to be replaced by two people who have no individual characteristics at all except their relationship? She would have been extremely undone.

I have read some well thought out P&P sequels in the past, and I know that it is possible to create such a novel that keep Elizabeth and Darcy in character, has interesting plot lines, and does not overdo the relationship of the two. This novel, however, is nothing but fanfiction of the worst kind.

The trouble with books about globalization is that so many of them seem to focus on economics to the exclusion of everything else. In All Connected Now, author Walter Truett Anderson treats economics as no less important to globalization than culture, politics, and even biology. ("Far less frequently cited than Moore's Law, but likely to be at least as significant for all the world's economics and ecosystems in the years ahead, is the doubling time of genetic information.") The result is a helpful primer on what globalization may have in store for us, written by a two-cheers advocate. Anderson says we now live in a world of open systems: "There are no longer any closed cultural systems in the world, nor are there any closed biological systems; every culture develops new points of articulation with other cultures, every ecosystem is visited by exotic foreigners and affected by global events." A readable discussion of the complexities of Globalism

Walter Anderson's gift is to synthesize and explicate complex social issues in an intelligible, readable, and coherent manner. There is not a lot of news in this book. It is a fine overview of the complexities of globalization and all the different ways it manifests itself in our lives. It pulls together a lot of information on the ways in which our world is changing, how this change effects us, and how we effect the process of change.
Anderson also provides an overview of how people are thinking about and conceptualizing our changing, globalizing world. In short, it is an excellent primer or introduction to the processes of globalization and how people are responding to it. It is not a ponderous academic tome, but it does have a bibliography that you can use as a springboard for further explorations.
It helped me to get a handle on a lot of materials and information I was familiar with, but never had the time to read, study, and think about systematically.
One thing which I found helpful was the symbolic references to the Treaty of Wesphalia which ended the 30 years war in the 17th Century. It marks the transition from the world of the Holy Roman Empire to the world of the sovereign nation state. The current era is post-Wesphalian in that the boundaries that defined nation states are becoming more permeable and oftentimes irrelevant. Environmental, medical, economic, political and social problems do not begin and end at national borders, hence new ways of thinking and new forms of global governance are emerging to deal with these problems. Our post 9-11 world has seen efforts to strengthen national boundaries in response to a globalized threat, but it only affects a small part of the globalization process.
Another thing is the intersecting dimensions of Globalist-antiglobalist and political left-political right continuums. This could be conceived as a four fold table: globalist-left, globalist-right, antiglobalist-left, antiglobalist-right. I prefer to think of it as an x-y axis that defines a two dimensional grid.
This categorization scheme captures some of the ambiguities and paradoxes of responses to globalism. Anderson uses it to explain different perspectives offered by various writers and actions by various activists. It also helps me understand my own conflicted feelings about globalization (free markets, immigration, multi-culturalism, global warming, the aids epidemic, etc.)
Ultimately All Connected Now is a good place to start thinking about globalization. If you have already been thinking about globalization, this is a good place to pause and review your thinking, and the thoughts other's have had, about globalization.

Globalization is much more than economics.

Anderson provides an enlightening and accessible look at the multitude of changes taking place today that are usually characterized by the word 'globalization'. As he so clearly points out, these changes are not merely economic, although such changes are important, but also political, cultural and biological. This broader framework is likely to be important to those who would better understand (and perhaps alter) the course of globalization.
Anderson notes that nations are increasingly losing their closed character (and becoming more open), a development exemplified by the demolition of the Berlin Wall in 1989. In consequence of this, individual nations have less control over their economic, political, cultural and biological dimensions, and there is an increased need for associations of nations. It should be noted, however, that Anderson is skeptical about the likelihood of the emergence of global government.
A particularly useful part of Anderson's book is the classification of attitudes toward globalization that he presents in Chapter 12 ("Global Visions and Divisions"). They are: the globalist right; the globalist left; the antiglobalist right; and the antiglobalist left. With this classification in hand, one can better grasp the discomfort many people feel with the process of globalization, as well as why some people are working so hard to advance it.
What Anderson does, therefore, is develop a more nuanced view of what globalization is and a more nuanced view of individual responses to globalization. He makes globalization more complex, but it is surely not something to be addressed in a simple-minded fashion.

Groundshaking

The day I read the title of this book, my fears of the last 30 years were gone. It was stating the obvious, so obvious that not many managed to grasp it. Since humankind started to record history 5500 years ago and maybe long before, we are living in the First Global Civilisation. A civilisation that spans the planet and already goes beyond with human space missions, satellites, probes and robots.
It started with Columbus and global travel. Then this new civilisation which was born thanks to long distance communication (telegraph in the 19th century, later phone, telex, fax, internet) is reshaping our lives in different ways: at home, in cities, in our workplace, in our environment, in our information, in our bio-information, in the perception we have from ourselves.
In this perspective one understands the meaning of the 20th century, a transition between a set of civilisations gradually conquered by the West that took their independance but that remained connected into a global civilisation with multiple centers influencing each other.
We are a sentient specie (author calls us a global animal) rather than an American, an European, a Japanese and our problems are not national problems but global or human problems.
Global civilisation because it allows us to have a global vision of our planet (remember this picture taken from the Moon in 1969 showing Earth as a blue oasis in the middle of nowhere), to realize we have an ecosystem to which our survival is attached, to see the multiplicity of our beliefs and religions, the interraction of cultures, those who accept an open society and take ideas from abroad and those who refuse and fight against it. Sometimes the same people but on different subjects.
Global civilisation does not only have states (more than 200 ranging from tiny Monaco or Vatican to US, Canada, Russia, India and China), NGOs (US Aid, Red Cross, ... ) but 400 international organisations including the UN, NATO, ASEAN, the Arab League and the European Union, 38,000 transnational or global corporations (global because because they adapted to the environment faster than others), non-state actors (billionaires, drugs lords, terrorists), religions (many with the biggest being Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Taoism all calling for more than 1 billion members), citizens as individuals or organised in communities and organisations. All those interract to form our present world.
It does have an informal governance, a reunion of different spheres of the global civilisation but no global government (note: civilisations with multiple polities and no centralized government are numerous in the past: Mesopotamia, Greece, Mayan civilisation, Western Europe, India and China for some periods of their history).
This global civilisation triggers reactions, vision and divisions: anti-globalization, environment movements, labour movements, etc...
Although some author opinions will not be shared by everybody, it is concise, clear, well-written, easy to understand and easy to make its own opinion about the event we are all living today. Vision about life, job, travel, environment, foreign relations will be changed for ever. A true paradigm shift that makes sense of the last decades and removes the anguish felt by many in front of this changing and sometimes crual society. Once read, you feel just like a kid which became familiar to his new house. And more, you are astonished you did not realize it earlier while it was so obvious.
