Good collection all in one place

I'm still reading this, so I'll update if the later chapters are either terrible or brilliant.
There is quite a serious typo throughout the book (kindle version, downloaded around early October 2013): "1-32".
When followed by the word "stars" I am assuming it should read "1-5". But in at least one other place I think "1-3" was meant.

This book is a little disappointing, most due to the non-technical writing style. Other books in this series appear to be more mathematical but this one is mostly without math. It is difficult to understand the technical details without disclosing the math, but it may be good for those who prefer non-math reading.

The first three--basic italic, formal italic, and chancery italic--are fairly standard calligraphy forms. The fourth style, cursive italic, is designed for use as everyday handwriting. Presented in the authors' previous books, the eight-volume Italic Handwriting Series (Continuing Education Pr., 1986), and Write Now ( LJ 3/1/91), this style was devised to facilitate the transition from printing to cursive writing. Barbara Getty, MAT, has taught calligraphy and handwriting for over 25 years, and elementary school for 14 years. She has been an instructor at Lewis and Clark College, Portland Community College and Portland State University (in Portland, Oregon), currently conducts workshops on calligraphy and italic handwriting, and was featured on CNN. She studied with Lloyd Reynolds and Jacqueline Svaren. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and published in International Calligraphy Today. She is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College, did postgraduate work at Portland State University, receiving her MAT from Lewis and Clark College.

Inga Dubay, BA, has taught calligraphy at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon, since 1975, and was Book Arts Department Head for six years. She also taught at Portland State University and has conducted numerous calligraphy and handwriting workshops across the country including several International Calligraphy Conferences. She studied at Mills College, received her degree from the University of Oregon, and did post-graduate work at the Art Academy in Oslo, Norway, the University of Oregon, and the University of California, Berkeley. She studied calligraphy with Lloyd Reynolds and Lois McClelland. Her work has been shown in national and international juried and invitational exhibitions, and has been published in Calligraphy Review, Martha Stewart Living and Lettering Arts.

Both authors travel all over the country giving seminars to physicians and medical professionals on how to write legibly.

Beautiful style and easy to follow

This year I felt compelled to improve my penmanship, and originally found this book at the public library. What initially drew me to this book is that it taught "chancery italic" which is a style of lettering that I admired. James Pickering at "The Fountain Pen Network" has beautiful penmanship, and champions Chancery Italic and Chancery Cursive. His penmanship is beautiful, and I encourage you to perform an image search for some of his work.

This book teaches several italic families of letters: Basic Italic, Formal Italic, Chancery Italic, Cursive Italic, and some variations. The entire book is handwritten in the example lettering that the authors teach. The authors explain posture, paper position, the origins of calligraphy, fountain pens, and other topics related to penmanship. They also explain why many Americans have terrible handwriting. Their explanation fit my personal experience, and clarified why my penmanship was so bad.

To improve my penmanship, I practiced about 15 minutes per day for a couple of weeks, and saw dramatic improvement. To practice, I purchased a Canson Pro Layout Marker Pad (very nice tracing paper) and then traced the letters for 10-15 minutes. It was that easy. An example of my Basic Italic handwriting is attached. This book gave me the results I was seeking.

Italic Handwriting

I wish I had found this book 40 years ago. Well it wasn't published 40 years ago, but you get the idea. My handwriting had gotten to the point that even I could not read it. I decided to take up Italic handwriting and purchased this book. I realize now that it is a classic. All I know is that it has really helped me write better. I would strongly suggest that all parents purchase this book and have their children start to learn italic handwriting. They will be glad they did.

Easy to Follow and Learn

This book is great for improving handwriting and learning calligraphy for any age. This style conforms to the natural movements of the hands and is easy to learn. The authors instruction and letter development are based on research and can help even those who have found writing challenging!

This book is based on a 1981 German language edition published by Springer­ Verlag, Vienna, under the title Bioprozesstechnik. Philip Manor has done the translation, for which I am deeply grateful. Not all we hoped it would be.

I am fairly disappointed in the quality of this book for a couple of reasons. The illustrations are cartoonish and not all snakes (or other reptiles or amphibians) are identified leaving my daughter with more questions than answered. We were hoping for some more specific information, but this is a good "starter" book.

The best guide in coin collecting

I started getting the Guide Book of United States Coins (or as many who collect coins call it "The Red Book") back in 2014. I love this book. It has great information on the history of US coins, mintage numbers, good pictures of errors, variations of coins, other notes about certain coins especially rarer ones, and as far as I know, covers every US coin ever minted.

Now, you may be asking, what changes year to year that you feel the need to get one every year? To be honest, not that much. They do update the prices of coins based on market conditions including spot prices of metals used to mint coins, and they also add coins new minted coins. But other than that, not a whole lot changes from year to year.

I use this book as a stepping off point for pricing buying and selling coins. You may want to do a little other research along with this book when buying coins, but having this book has helped my find some amazing deals, and has steered me away from making bad buying decisions.

Beginner in collecting coins, and this book has everything a beginner needs from the parts of a coin to a description and price range, also history on each type of coin. Love it! I feel like a pro after reading it lol. And lots of pictures.

This is the most important text on time ever written!

The book has virtually no text, just a page of explanation in the beginning. (One instruction, to play music in straight and swung eighths, is vital for jazz musicians.) There is only 1 note in the text, the bass clef "e." You use the exercises in the book to develop your sense of pulse and sub-division of the beat.

I had 2 degrees and a teaching certificate in music before I ever found this book. By the time I'd finished the first 14 pages, my understanding and ability to play time was virtualy mastered.

The magic of this book is the hidden organization. I learned in education classes the value of "sequential learning" and "one complexity at a time." This book applies those principles in a masterful way. Every possible placement of quarter notes and rests are explored, line by line, in a sequential fashion. (Rest on beat 2, rest on beat 3, rest on beat 4, rest on beat 1, then 2 rests, 3 rests and so on.)

After quarter notes, the same thing is done with eighths and sixteenths, including ties. Dotted rhythms are explored. By the time you've finished the section, you have encountered every single possible rhythm.

I have my students count and then play these examples. It is a discipline and can be tiresome, but make it a game for yourself. If you want to learn to read music better, this is one "must have" book.

Please, please, please do yourself a favor and delve into Lisa Lister's work. Becoming aware of my cycle and how it affects my life, emotions, and energy levels has truly changed my life. This is some of the most important work that we as women have to do right now and I promise that it is a joy and a privilege to do so! Lisa is full of wisdom, sass, and love, and this book is an instant classic for me. I have it in Kindle form, now I need to order the physical version so I can take notes in it!

Amazing book! I loved that she made parallels between the moon and our cycles. She actually tells you which days of her cycles she is more creative, more restful, and more driven, all while giving you the tools to decode yourself! Highly recommend.

Connect with one of the most sacred aspects of being female

I have read books on tracking the menstrual cycle before and appreciated the content, but was left craving something more...I didn't know what that more was until I read Lisa's book and got the spiritual, embodied, divine feminine loving side of the cycle.

I have recommended this book countless times to clients and friends and am happy to do the same here for anyone wanting to connect with their body, energy, and one of the most sacred aspects of being female.
