A Hardy for Even Non-Hardy Lovers

Another beautiful Hardy read, and--not to give any spoilers--a comparative frolic. Not as skippy-happy (for Hardy) as FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, to be sure, but not such a downer as JUDE THE OBSCURE.
Lovely Grace Melbury is educated above her humble family's station in the woodlands of Little Hintock, making her too good in her father's opinion (and occasionally her own) for her childhood friend and sweetheart Giles Winterborne. Grace then comes to the attention of the fascinating dilettantish doctor Fitzpiers, and the Hardy Tragedy Train is set in motion. Whoo whoo! All aboard!
Wonderful collection of characters, rich setting, and a careful plot make this a worthwhile read. Highly recommend.
Note on the free Kindle edition: in contrast to many other free classics, this one has far, far fewer bizarre and distracting typos.

an incredible story

This book follows life in a country town in the 1800's. This book has it all love, scandal, deceit, and so much more. The characters come to life. I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Woodlanders

Hardy's poetic language takes you to the 19th century English countryside, and a movie plays in your inward eye. You learn that status and class, so important to some, have little effect on heroic or villainous behavior. Hardy has psychological insight into both the male and female psyche, and his knowledge can be applied today. He portrays reality. As an English professor, I find that reading Hardy's novels expands my vocabulary and exercises my brain. I am reading it on Kindle, where I can touch upon an unfamiliar word, but Hardy's vocabulary is ancient and vast, so sometimes there is no definition found. If you loved Tess of the D'Urbervilles, read The Woodlanders. It's a complex, psychological novel, with unexpected twists and no neat, happy ending.
