Great reference for anyone using IASTM in the clinic

There are lots of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization tools on the market and even more "literature" about them. I have typically been in the camp of "there is nothing better than my hands" for working on patients. A few years ago I was introduced to Graston tools. After using them for a few weeks there were pro's and con's. The main con was the hefty over $2k price tag. Another con was I could not find a reasonable (or conclusive) text on the techniques. Since then I've used ASTYM and gua sha tools, both with pro's and con's but enough con's for me to keep looking and staying in my aforementioned camp. Recently, I was introduced to the EDGE IASTM tool. I was initially very surprised because of the price tag...for a good reason. It was around $100, which I've never seen for a IASTM metal tool. So I decided to give it a try and it has been part of daily practice ever since. Once I knew that the tool was staying I decided to venture out and see if there was any written material on it and this is how we ended up here. The book for $6.99 is a great reference text to keep in the clinic for daily use. I still maintain that there is nothing more precise than my hands, but the EDGE tool takes 40-50% of the soft tissue work, which means that saves my hands a good bit. Most importantly I've gotten excellent results and my patients have only had positive feedback. So long story short...get the book and get the tool.

A great introduction to IASTM and a great way to get started using it in clinical practice ASAP!

The E-book, An Introduction to Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization by Ove Indergaard is a steal at only $6.99. As a clinician I have spent an ample amount of time reading texts, attending conferences, and listening to both colleagues and mentors about manual therapy. However, in retrospect I regretfully admit that much of that time spent was wasted when compared with the information presented by Indergaard.
Many manual therapy and IASTM instructors and schools of thought overly complicate theories about why these techniques work, teach preposterous or outdated ideologies, and over complicate the techniques themselves. In addition, many of these same people push an overly aggressive approach to IASTM with excessive force application, at an excessive price point to boot.
Indergaard gives an overview of current and past theories related to why IASTM may be efficacious and how it may have different effects on different tissues and systems of the body. Perhaps myofascial work should be more aptly labeled as Neuromyofascial work? While much research still needs to be done on IASTM as well as manual therapy in general, we probably won't ever know for 100% certainty the exact mechanisms behind the efficacy of IASTM. However, we may be able to continue discrediting certain theoretical applications.
The information contained in this e-book matches that of a name-brand weekend CEU course. However, it is your permanent reference to keep and digest at your own pace. It isn't overly complicated and doesn't require spending thousands of dollars on "special" instruments or constant re-certifications. Nevertheless, the ideas and treatment patterns contained herein have helped myself as a clinician and my skills as a manual therapist grow tremendously. My previous patients, athletes and even my fiance have benefited from the information contained in this short but sweet introduction.
This manual would serve any clinician or manual therapist well and while it may seem too cheap, too simple, and too good to be true...but it isn't. In my experience so far...the expensive texts, instruments, CEU courses, and "flavor of the month" treatments/ideas are often the things that are too good to be true.
$6.99....Cheaper than two coffees at StarBucks or a meal at Chipotle...Who can argue with that?

Save your $$$ by getting a low cost IASTM tool and this book.

If you are interested in learning a generic IASTM treatment technique and not spending the big $$$ for Graston or ASTYM this is a great place to start. While the book does cover how IASTM works and some common treatment patterns with a few videos it does not cover contraindications. This is a disappointment as I believe that really should be included in an "introductory" level text. Knowing what and when NOT to treat is often more important than knowing how to treat patients. This book is for professionals with a very good working knowledge of anatomy. There are many places where it is too easy to pinch soft tissue between the tool and superficial bones that are not mentioned. The treatment pages consist of anatomical diagrams with lines indicating the path for the tool with a few lines of text. This makes it easy for learning the basic treatment patterns. Overall the content is condensed to the minimum. Adequate for an “introductory” text but you will need to search other sources for more detailed information.
While the forward is by Erson Religioso who sells The Edge tool that is used throughout the book you can use TML Tools MyoCare (identical for about half the price) or even a $2-3 Chinese soup spoon and get the same results.
Overall it is hard to beat the value you will get for this price.
